The One That Got Away: Friendship, Texas #4

The One That Got Away by Magan Vernon is the fourth book in the Friendship, TX series. It's my second book by Vernon, but the first in the series. Jordan Webber was the gorgeous tatted, artist that moved to New York immediately after High School and broke Abbey's heart. Abbey Dillinger was the sullen photographer that held a grudge and basically hated her life in Friendship, but was too fearful and in a rut to try something different. I really disliked Abbey in the beginning. Poor first impression. And I hated her friends. How could what's so obvious in the first few chapters not be obvious to Abbey. It was easy to see the direction of the story. With friends like that, who needs enemies. But as the story progressed and focused more on Jordan and Abbey, I was liking the book better. It was told with a single POV, Abbey's, and it was well written but it struggled to get off the ground for me. Additionally, the humor was a little goofy at times. I disliked the first half of the book, but I loved the last half and I especially loved the last quarter of the story. In the end, it was a journey of healing, forgiveness, growth, change, exploration and second chances. I was on the fence between a 3 and 4 rating and settled on a 3.5 with a rounding up to 4 stars. The One That Got Away can be read as a standalone; however, I recommend reading the series in order to understand the full backstory of supporting characters. All in all, it was enjoyable and I look forward to catching up with the beginning of the series while waiting for Love Like Crazy, Christy and Clay's story
