Carter Reed (Carter Reed #1)

Carter Reed was the first book in a two part series by Tijan. It was well written, well developed and thoroughly entertaining. Although part of a series, there was a beginning, middle and end and could be read as a standalone if desired. Emma. Beautiful, sassy and loyal. Carter. Gorgeous, dangerous, a warrior and uber protective over those he loved. The focal point of the story was Carter providing protection for Emma. Carter was Emma's brother, AJ's, best friend. When Emma was younger, Emma watched her brother being beaten to death. Carter took care of her afterwards. She hadn't talked to him in ten years but when her roommate was being raped by her boyfriend, the son of a mob boss, Emma killed him and she sought refuge with Carter, an enforcer for a rival mafia family. Tijan then built the story around the protection and the developing relationship while simultaneously revealing secrets from the past that tied the two together. It was told primarily from a single point of view, Emma; however, we strategically got Carter's POV from time to time when it was pertinent. The storyline was suspenseful, action packed, fast paced and captivating. It was a little confusing at times and most of it made sense in the end, but there were still a few gaps that I would have liked filled in better. For example, I wish I understood Carter and Emma's history better. However, it was still totally enjoyable. Titan included a great cast of supporting characters and I really hope to see a book for Nate/Theresa and another one for Amanda. I also wouldn't mind seeing something for Gene and Mike. In the meantime, Carter Reed 2 is on the horizon and I can't wait to see where Tijan takes us next with their relationship.
